On seeing how the soldiers of Dhritarashtra's sons were arranged in battle formation, Yudhishthira spoke to Arjuna, 'When a small number has to fight with a larger one, the arrangement should be a suchimukha (in the shape of a mouth or needle).' Arjuna replied, 'I will construct a Vajra vyuha. Bhima will lead.' The mighty army of the Pandavas seemed to be like the overflowing, surging and moving Ganga. (ribbon-like, fast, fluid formations.) Bhimasena, Dhrishtadyumna, Nakula, Sahadeva and Dhrishtaketu were in the vanguard. Surrounded by 1 army, Virata was at the rear. Nakula and Sahadeva protected Bhima's wheels. Droupadi's 5 sons and Abhimanyu protected the rear. Dhrishtadyumna protected them. Shikhandi protected him, and Arjuna protected Shikhandi. Satyaki protected Arjuna's rear. King Yudhishthira was in the center of the army surrounded by elephants. Yajnasena went behind Virata, with 1 army.Â
— Bibek Debroy Chapter 878-9. Bhagavad Gita Parva
Bhishma was stationed in that battle, like a fire without smoke. He was like the sun at midday, scorching with energy. The soldiers were slaughtered in large numbers. Bhishma held a bow that was always like a wheel. He released flaming arrows that were like venomous snakes. When the soldiers were crushed and shattered, the sun set, and nothing could be seen.
Debroy. Bhishma Vadha. Chapter 906
The numbered circles represent actions in time. Thus - (0) Bhishma and his crew kill large numbers of regular solders in the Chedi, Panchala, Kashi armies. (3) Then Uttara attacks Shalya, Shalya kills Uttara in the counterattack. Shanka attacks Shalya, thereupon Jayadratha and four of Duryodhana’s brothers and two of Krishna’s brothers (Vinda and Anuvinda) counterattack Shanka. Arjuna enters the fray to check Bhima and save Shanka, whose chariot and horses have been destroyed by the gang of seven - Shanka jumps on Arjuna’s chariot to get away. (4) After fighting with Arjuna for a bit, Bhishma turns and attacks Drupada - king of the Panchalas - and kills many soldiers.
The skulls represent deaths.
Additional information in the diagram - Arjuna’s standard is Hanuman - a monkey symbol. Bhima has a lion on his standard.
