Sanjaya said, “This hardship is the result of your transgressions. Your duplicity and favoritism is the cause. Your malice toward the Pandavas is the cause. This destruction is because of your crimes. Now listen to how the battle raged.”

Sequence
(24)
In every direction there were elephants. Satyaki rained arrows down on them. Their tusks were broken. They were covered in blood. Their temples and frontal lobes were shattered. Their ears, faces and trunks were lopped off. They were without riders and flags. Their armor and bells were fragmented. The giant standards were brought down. The blankets were torn apart. With the riders slain, they roamed in panic. They shrieked and roared, like the thunder of clouds. They were mangled by Satyaki’s iron arrows.

Jalasandha picked up a sword and a shield made of bull hide and marked with the signs of one hundred moons. He whirled the sword and hurled it at Satyaki. The sword severed Satyaki’s bow. Satyaki picked up another bow as thick as a shala tree. Satyaki used two kshurapa arrows to sever Jalasandha’s arms, with their ornaments and armlets. Those arms were like clubs. They fell down on the ground, like two five-headed serpents falling down from a mountain. With a third kshurapa arrow, Satyaki severed his head, possessing beautiful teeth and a handsome jaw and adorned with earrings. Jalasandha’s elephant was covered with blood. He was hanging upside down from the seat. The elephant fled, uttering hideous shrieks, crushing its own soldiers.

With Drona’s charioteer slain, the horses began to run away. The radiant chariot whirled in a thousand circles, like the sun.

Bhima hurled a club towards Drona, who leapt down from his chariot. The club uprooted Drona’s horses, charioteer, standard and chariot, like the wind among trees. Dushasana hurled a javelin. They severed those shields with their swords. When those were severed, they engaged in a bout of wrestling. That attacked each other with arms like iron clubs. Bhurishrava knocked Satyaki down with a blow. Bhurishrava dragged Satyaki, like a lion dragging an elephant. Bhurishrava unsheathed his sword and grasping Satyaki by the hair, struck him in the chest with his foot. Arjuna used an arrow to sever Bhurishrava’s arm which held the sword.
“O’ Arjuna! What will you tell Yudhishthira? ‘I killed Bhurishrava in battle, though he was not fighting with me?’”, Bhurishrava cried.
“Who among the Kurus condemned the slaughter of Abhimanyu, when he was without a weapon, without a chariot and without armor?”, Arjuna answered.
Bhurishrava bent down, touched his head to the ground, and offered his severed arm.
