These are battles of the Red River War of 1874, or the defeat of the Comanche by General Nelson Miles and Colonel Ranald Slidell Mackenzie. After this the southern plains would be tame and never the same. According to Lonnie J. White, this war that would produce some of the most sensational fights in western history. With the conquest of the southern plains Comanche, the base of the pillar was broken. The Sioux and Cheyenne would fight on. Their defeats of Crooke on the Rosebud and the annihilation of Custer in 1876 were the high-water mark before the tide receded.
