As It Rhymes
1.
Vaishampayana said,
Krishnaa tied her hair tight into a twist tip.
Krishna tucked her ocean waves of hair into a bib slip.
2.
Krishnaa arrived at the southern city gate.
The doorlock put Krishnaa in a sorry state.
Krishnaa paced up and down in the street with a wayward gait.
A crowd gathered to gape.
3.
Krishnaa roamed to and fro in her vaishya shroud.Â
Krishnaa introduced herself as Sairandhri to the townie crowd.
4-5.
‘Who are you? What do you want?’, the crowd posed.Â
‘I’ve brung my services to Virata’, Draupadi proudly proposed.
6.
The townsfolk thought Draupadi’s servant story was a pack of lies.Â
Then Virata’s beloved wife Kaikeyi arrived.
7.
Kaikeyi could not believe her star struck eyes.
Kaikeyi was also called Sudeshna and Sudeshna was Kaikeyi’s kid.
8.
Sudeshna said,
‘Tell me your plight.
Tell me your purpose.’
‘My name is Sairandhri. I am here for karma’, Draupadi replied.
9.
Sudeshna said,
‘You are stunning. You are gorgeous.
You must have had servants falling at your feet.Â
10.
Your looks could kill dead men in their sleep.
Your navel is circle deep.
Like a swan your curvy s’s swerve and sweep.Â
11.
Your flesh is flush full hips.
Cherry red lips.
Well endowed and full hair.Â
Dark complexion, delicate ear fair.
Lithe limber limbs.Â
Imbued with a divine shine.
12.
Bimba’s curvaceous middle.
Lotus eyes full of furious sound.
Arcing neck topped by a full skull mound.
13.
Sarasvati’s leaf.
Sarasvati’s petal feet.
Sarasvati’s beautiful mettle.
14.
Tell me who you are really.
Don’t sell me a sorry servant story.
Are you a Yaksha?
A Goddess or Apsara?
A Gandharvi?
15.
A lady of the serpent.
I must know, are you a Kinnari or Rohini?
16.
Alambusha?
Misrakeshi?
Pandrika?
Indrani or Varuni?
Which auspicious famous Goddess are you?’
17.
Draupadi said,
‘I am not a Goddess in a tattered dress.
I am neither an Asura nor Rakshasi.
I am merely meek Saindhri.
18.
I am the hairstylist and makeup artist that works the heartest.
I can make lotus garlands or any other flower from your garden harvest.
19.
I can make your hair shine like light.
I served Krishna’s consort Radha.
20.
I served Krishnaa, the beloved wife of Pandava.
I wander to work where grub is right and clothes are tight.
21.
I serve mixed drinks with ice.
Sudeshna I have come to you for service.’
22.
Sudeshna said,
‘I have no doubt you can style hair like a maze.
I also have no doubt that you will draw the king’s slack jawed gaze.
23.
Look at how the women of my house stare blank-face.
Your intoxicating presence is a marital menace.
24.
When you’re around even tree boughs bow to the ground.
Any man will fall to temptation and infatuation at sight and sound.
25.
King Virata will fall good and hard when he gets a look.
I’ll be forsook like an out of print book.
26.
Your dark limbs attract the eyes of girls and guys.
The king’s pulse will race and his breath will rise.
27-28.
Your affection will be his cherished prize.
To allow your beautiful eyebrows into the house would be like climbing a tree and jumping off the highest limb to death.Â
29.
With you running about the king’s pad to grab.
I will be as ruined as a pregnant crab.’
30.
Draupadi said,
‘No to Virata and anyone that seeks my hand.
Never at any time, I have five Gandharva husbands.Â
31.
My husbands are the sons of a famous musician.
They afflict misery on any who make an improper imposition.
32.
I cannot wash feet or entertain pleasure.
My husbands will counter-measure any proposition.
33.
The man who tries to seduce me like any other lass with lilac lash will be reduced to ash in haste.
34.
I am faithful to my husbands and chaste.Â
Let no man get it into their thickheads they can place a grubby paw on my waist.’Â
35.
Sudeshna said,
‘Ah, that is so sweet!
You do not have to hit the street.
You will not have to wash dirty feet nor become a thirsty man’s meat treat.’
36.
Vaishampayana said,
‘Krishnaa led Virata’s wife to fashion city made her super pretty.
No one was savvy Lady Sairandhri in her sheen silk saris was secretly Queen Draupadi.
